Lotus claims it has changed virtually every component on the Esprit since its debut in 1976. The most significant was the replacement of the old turbo four with a turbo V-8 in 1998. Last year, Lotus changed the engine's electronic control module for more torque at lower revs, and it offered color-keyed dash and door trim. For 2003 the Esprit continues intact. The aluminum V-8, which puts a premium on light weight and high output, has a peak output of 350 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The engine is rather loud, exhibiting more noise and vibration than many other exotics. But the Esprit remains one of the fastest sports cars around: 0 to 60 takes just 4.1 seconds. A daily driver the Esprit is not, but a head turner it continues to be—at least for one more year. Lotus plans to sell about 150 examples in 2003, its last year.
